What’s bullshit is that [Violentacrez] set up a paypal for reddit people to donate money to him, and you know all those gross dudes will help their own.
Good Riddance, though I am annoyed that people will help him.
“I’m eligible [for insurance], but COBRA is very expensive. Who can afford to pay 5 times as much for insurance at the very moment they lose their income? Only rich folks can afford COBRA. I have maybe 3 weeks pay in the bank. I just hope I can hold out a month. My wife hasn’t been able to work for over a year, and our savings will last about 3 weeks, not considering the current lack of health insurance.”
I wonder if this creep was for or against Obamacare? At any rate, he’s gonna need it now.
I got “let go” a couple years ago. I job-hunted for 5 months before I started working again, and, oh yeah, my husband was also out of work. Unemployment covered the mortgage and COBRA. Beyond that? Our savings. Savings which we had because we lived on less than we earned before we needed it.
According to Gawker’s story the guy was a programmer at a financial services firm. “Programmer” tends to mean “above median income”. He probably could’ve saved more of his income if he’d put his mind to it. There are lots of reasons to have savings - water heaters need replacing, car trouble, expensive medical bills - heck, layoffs happen, new bosses might not get along with everyone, etc.
Of course, if he’d put it mind to it, he might have thought through other consequences too.
